Get Involved!

Get in on the ground floor of new W7HEN offerings!

Club leadership knows that there is interest in these topics, that we have many talented members in these areas, and that we have many new operators looking to learn more in these areas. (We also know that there will be overlap, which is great.) Your club leadership wants to empower you to guide our radio activities with what matters most to you.

Get in on the ground floor and shape the trajectory and culture of your radio club. Everything is open for discussion based on the member’s needs, desires, and efforts. These groups are designed to provide a forum for experienced and rookie members to congregate and meet. These groups are not intended to add an extra layer of bureaucracy. Get involved with what interests you today!

Before we get started… what’s the premise behind all of this?

  • To engage and ultimately empower membership, we want to create additional action groups that specialize in different functions identified as critical to the success of the Henderson Amateur Radio Club, Inc.
  • Each group will initially serve as a litmus test, or barometer, of member interest. If the interest simply isn’t there, it simply isn’t there. There is no need for the BOD to try forcing a square peg through a round hole. Ultimately, we want to allow our membership the freedom and space to explore and further grow in facets of amateur radio that interest them.
  • Each group will eventually have its leader or facilitator. Depending on the dynamic, this person might be suggested by the individual group or identified by the president. With the exception of president and treasurer, each group will have a member of the BOD as a liaison. This liaison is not the leader of the group, but rather someone who engages in servant leadership theory to inspire, engage, and close the communication loop between board members and membership.
  • (The president and treasurer are not included as liaisons. The president maintains impartiality in the event a dispute arises, and the treasurer engages in financial functions.)

Technical Advisory Group (TAG)

The Technical Advisory Group is open to all members interested in guiding the club’s overall trajectory in all technical matters. One of the club’s biggest assets to the overall Las Vegas amateur radio community has been its Sunday Night Tek Net. With the passing of long-time club member and Tek Net Director Earl Lizardi WB6AMT, the club’s Sunday Night Tek Net has been on hiatus. One of the primary roles of TAG going forward is to provide guidance, connections with subject matter experts, and ideas for upcoming Tek Nets, as well as a forum for hands-on technical learning.

High-Frequency Operations Group (Hi-FOG)

The High-Frequency Operations Group is open to all members interested in high-frequency, or HF, communications. This group welcomes all forms of HF communications and HF activities. Interested in contesting? Join HiFOG. Interested in DXing? Join HiFOG. Trying to work DXCC or WAS? Join HiFOG. Want to help the club explore a local 10m or 6m net? Join HiFOG.

Field Radio Operations Group (FROG)

The Field Radio Operations Group is open to members who want to get out and do things. Do pedestrian fox hunts sound interesting to you? What about Parks on the Air (POTA) or Summits on the Air (SOTA) activities? Maybe you want to set up a W7HEN demonstration station at an upcoming community event, such as a fall carnival or cultural festival. If it gets you out of the house, and operating in public, this is the group for you.

Digital Operations Group (DOG)

What’s up, dogs? Are you an FT8 master? Are you struggling to get your radio to talk with the computer? No matter where you fall on that continuum, we’d love to have you join this group. Mesh, FT8, APRS, PSK31, RTTY, SSTV, and packet operators – or those interested in learning more – about these modes are invited to join this group.

Sunshine & Social

The Henderson Amateur Radio Club, Inc. is only as strong as its membership. Our membership sometimes has rough patches, such as bereavement and job loss. We also know that our membership celebrates milestone birthdays and anniversaries, promotions, and the birth of children/grandchildren. Members of this committee show support and compassion for our ham radio family by sending greeting cards and phone trees and being that lending ear. The Sunshine and Social Committee also helps coordinate club functions such as picnics, dinners, and other socials. Participation is open to anyone willing to help improve our community and club.

Repeater Assistance

The Repeater Assistance Team is a team of appointed members that ensures the club’s repeater assets are deployed, maintained, and inventoried for all licensed amateurs. Due to the confidentiality that typically accompanies site leases and landlord agreements as well as the role demanding existing repeater knowledge, this team is appointed by the president under their executive purview established by §3.2.4.1.6 of the Henderson Amateur Radio Club, Inc. bylaws. Members of the RAT must have a demonstrated track record of not only the requisite technical skills but also interpersonal skills such as trustworthiness, discretion, and communication, which are required to help maintain and grow our robust repeater network. Members looking to learn how to build and maintain repeaters are encouraged to join the Technical Advisory Group to gain first-hand knowledge before seeking an appointment by the president to this committee.

The Field Day Advisory Group organizes and plans the entirety of Field Day, which is the largest American ham radio event of the year. FDAG doesn’t execute Field Day on their own – that’s the job of each and every member – but they do the early leg work starting in January culminating in the big Field Day event every June.
