TEK NET

The Henderson Amateur Radio Club is pleased to present our Tek Net every Sunday evening, starting at 8pm local time (0300 UTC).

The audio portion of the Tek Net will be found on the Henderson Amateur Radio Club Repeater Network (RF).  The audio may also be accessed via Echolink (W7HEN-R node 740644) and Allstar (node 44045).

The audio will refer to this page, so that the listener can more fully understand the concepts as they are presented.

All are welcome!

Using an external Automatic Noise Canceller on  your HF radio.

The unit we are going to be covering tonight is the Timewave ANC-4, which has been in my station for about 12 years.

This Antenna Noise Canceller is made by Timewave Technology , Inc.

What this unit can do:

* Cancels S9 line noise floor

* Reduces BPL noise

* Nulls out strong interfering signals

* Eliminates noise before it reaches your receiver

* Up to 40db reduction of interference generated by power lines, electric motors, TV’s and other sources.

* Wipes out noise before it gets to your receiver front end

SPECIFICATIONS

Operating frequency range – 500Khz to 80Mhz

Maximum transmit power thru unit  – 250 watts

Average time to switch to Bypass when Transmit RF detected – 7 ms, typical

Typical insertion loss – approximately 6db

Noise cancellation – 40db or greater

Operating voltages  – +11 Vdc to +16 Vdc @ 150 ma.

Dimensions – 1.7″H x 6″W x 4.3″D

How it works:

The interfering signal needs to be received by the external sensing antenna.

It’s phase and magnitude are then adjusted so that it matches the offending interference, but is 180 degrees out of phase, effectively cancelling out the interference, allowing the weaker radio signals to be heard.

This is particularly effective at reducing local power line noise or other locally generated noises.

A short telescoping antenna on the sensing port will be effective on any noise being generated inside the house, like a nearby computer.

If the noise is coming from a source outside the house, then the external noise antenna port should be connected to an outside antenna.

What else can it do?

The ANC-4 can also be used as an ACTIVE ANTENNA.

Connect a long wire to the Noise antenna port and adjust the NOISE GAIN control to provide amplification of received signals.

To use it as an Active Antenna, no antenna should be connected to the Main antenna jack.

As seen above this is a very well constructed unit that is made in the USA, using thru-hole technology makes it a breeze to repair if needed.

Inside has several jumper options for setting the unit up the way you want, for example, if you are experiencing Broadcast Band interference there are jumpers to select Broadcast filtering  or BC trap.

These are still actively advertised on the Timewave.com website, Although now they have the ANC-4+ available.

At the time I bought this it was the first unit of it’s kind to address external generated noise, but I’m sure there are similar units available online now.

Ham Radio Outlet has the ANC-4+ in stock at $259.95.

As always, until next week 73,
