I saved the most precarious function for last, checking or measuring the AC voltages in your home outlets. These outlets have 120 volts AC and are not forgiving if your not careful with the setting s on your meter and leads.
Never attempt to measure AC current with a multimeter…ever, only AC volts on the 200 volts range if its not an auto-ranging meter. When facing the electrical outlet you’ll see two vertical slots, one a little bigger than the other one, and the ground hole for the ground pin on a grounded plug.
First, I always check between the ground hole and the larger slot connection, this should display zero (0) volts.
Next check between the ground hole and the smaller connection slot, this should display 120 volts.
Next checking between the large slot and the small slot should display the same voltage as the previous test.
If you aren’t comfortable testing or checking Ac voltages in your house, play it safe and call an electrician or someone who has experience with AC voltages.
